Yes, you heard right!
Cracker Box Inc. ornament kits from the 1970s, can sell for over $300.
A few years ago, they were actually selling for over $500, so values have come down a bit.
Why so much for a simple beaded Christmas tree ornament?
Well, many of these “named” ornament kits were, and are today, remarkably put together with designs of distinction. Don’t think of these kits or ornaments like the ones you might find sold at Lee Wards Craft Store; these special satin ball, ornament kits were made in limited amounts on a timeline, most of the ornament types have retired-which make them even more desirable. The ornaments are made with quality materials that are made exclusively for each named ornament. Materials, such as faceted jewels from Austria and Germany, detailed braided trims, and the incredible talent of Paul and Walter in designing these unique and beautiful ornaments.
Since these special and unique kits contain only exquisite high quality and trims, some of the earlier kits and ornaments cannot be recreated due to the inability to acquire the materials necessary. This drastically increases the value of those original kits (around 100 different types) from the ’70s (called the Golden Oldies).
The original mail order forms for these beaded ornaments can be found in 1975 magazine issues of household magazines, such as Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, Decorative Crafts and Woman’s Day. If you happen to find some of these ’70s magazines, check inside for the Cracker Box ornament order ads.
Examples of some of the named ornament kits were: Kaleidoscope, Whispers, Emerald Snow; Madame Butterfly, Regency, Crown Prince- which was sent to Queen Elizabeth who gave it to the Princess of Wales, Diana, for Prince William’s first Christmas.
So, when attending estate sales and household auctions, make sure to go through those Christmas boxes.
Treasures await, for those who take time to search.
