The Christmas tree holds such importance to so many people, especially to me.
As a young child living in New England, my father sold fir trees in our front yard for some extra Christmas cash. We used to tunnel our way through the snow they had been placed in. It was so much fun!
We, of course, got to pick out our tree first.
It was such a special event to decorate the tree with lights, Shiny Brite Ornaments, trim and silver icicle tinsel. Today, I still prefer a real Balsam fir tree to any artificial tree. I love the smell, it brings back so many wonderful childhood memories.
Not everyone preferred a traditional, real Christmas tree. Many other types of Christmas trees popular during the mid-century into the 1980s, included “Feather” trees (made of green-dyed, goose feathers). These trees originated in Germany in the late 19th Century, then appeared in America in the early 20th Century and were sold at dime stores; small Bottle-Brush artificial tree became popular with the English, post WWII; the 1960’s-80’s, ceramic, Atlantic mold, table-top Christmas trees, and last but not least; the futuristic silver aluminum, artificial Christmas trees-which came with a rotating “color wheel.”
The shiny aluminum- Pom Pom style, branched trees were by far the most admired. Back in 1964, a friend of my brothers had one in his home. I remember thinking his family must be rich to have a silver tree in their living room. It was totally magical! My brother said to me, “Patty you have to come see the shiny silver Christmas tree!” Upon seeing the tree, I was mismerized. As the color wheel rotated, the silver branches and ornments would turn red, blue, green and yellow.
Today, some of these vintage artificial trees can be quite valuable to collectors.
The silver aluminum trees of the Space Age (1960s), came in other colors, such as a pastel pink, green or blue-The Evergleam, pink tree can sell online for over a thousand dollars!
I have a tiered green-glazed and flocked (snow-capped branches), ceramic Christmas tree, which stands 20″ tall. It has a musical box and colored plastic lights. It won’t be sold because it has become a family tradition heirloom.
Below, are some artificial Christmas trees that sold online, and what they sold for.
Not junk!
Have a Merry Christmas everyone, and God bless.
Lyrics to the Song: Oh Christmas tree (O tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum)
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
Thy leaves are so unchanging
Not only green when summer’s here,
But also when it’s cold and drear.
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
Thy leaves are so unchanging!
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
Such pleasure do you bring me!
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
Such pleasure do you bring me!
For every year this Christmas tree,
Brings to us such joy and glee.
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
Such pleasure do you bring me!
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
You’ll ever be unchanging!
A symbol of goodwill and love
You’ll ever be unchanging
Each shining light
Each silver bell
No one alive spreads cheer so well
Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree,
You’ll ever be unchanging
