My Favorite Easy Homemade Apple Crisp Recipe

Apple crisp serving with frozen creamy Cool Whip

I have been using this apple crisp recipe for for 40 years now-it’s a real crowd pleaser and is so easy to make.

I always use Granny Smith or Cortland apples as these apples are a bit tart, but sweet.

A funny story:

Recently, my son moved into a new home. My husband and I decided to help with the move, and as we arrived, I just happened to notice across the street was a huge apple tree loaded with Cortland apples. These yummy apples were falling to the ground wastefully-which I hate to see.

So, with a bit of nagging to my husband, he went over to ask the home owner with this tree, if we could pick a bag or two of the apples. No problem….we just had to ask. Well, my son didn’t know this, and he curiously watched his Dad and Mom picking apples off his new neighbors tree. As we entered my son’s front door, he pleaded. “Please don’t tell me you just went over and started picking apples off on my new neighbor’s tree without permission?”

Of course, we explained and all is good.

The apples were so good, we made a second visit, but this time brought a ladder.

We ended up giving the apple tree owners a couple of servings of my homemade apple crisp and they were happy.

Delicious Easy Homemade Apple Crisp

  • 4 cups tart apples-peeled, cored and thinly sliced (Cortlund or Granny Smith works well)
  • 2/3 or 3/4 cup packed brown light sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour (I use organic flour)
  • 1/2 cup quick cooking oats
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon (level tsp)
  • 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup butter (softened and cut-up in sections)
  1. Peel and slice at least 6 large apples-set aside.

Spray an  8″ square cooking pan with PAM Cooking Spray; add apples evenly to the pan.

In a large mixing bowl. combine the first-four ingredients; add butter pieces and mix on slow speed until mixture is thick and chunky-about 2 minutes.

Break-up the mixture with your fingers and  add to the top of the apples evenly. Bake in 375 degree F oven.

Bake for 35 minutes, or until top is golden brown.

Warm in microwave for 30 seconds; remove and add some frozen Cool Whip (lower in calories), or homemade vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy!!
